How Ready Are Students For Live Learning Online?

The field of education has shifted a lot over the past few decades. Traditional classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning techniques which offer flexibility pre-recorded lessons and class meetings held via real-time videoconferencing software. Even these online methods might not be sufficient for students who prefer a class with real-time interaction.

Live online learning is a different method to other online learning strategies. It permits students and instructors to communicate in real-time through videoconferencing programs like Zoom. While there are numerous benefits of live learning but it can be a challenge for some students to adjust to this kind of online learning. This study focuses on student willingness to learn live and identifies the primary elements that impact it. The results show that the most important factors that influence students’ readiness are motivation for learning online, self-directed learning ability. Researchers also conducted a post-hoc test as well as a multi-group analysis to examine gender differences, undergraduate, graduate, and sub-degree students. The study found that postgraduates are better equipped for live learning than undergraduates and sub-degrees.

To ensure that students are prepared for a Live Session it is recommended that instructors outline clear expectations of what they will need to be aware of and do prior to, during and after the session.
